Il sito archeologico di Fossacava. Alla scoperta di una cava di epoca romana
Il sito di Fossacava è tra le pochissime cave di età romana ad essere stato oggetto di uno scavo archeologico stratigrafico, in Italia e negli altri territori dell’Impero; le indagini, condotte nel 2015 dal Comune di Carrara e dalla Soprintendenza Archeologica della Toscana, hanno permesso di ricostruire la storia di una cava romana in tutti i suoi aspetti.
Nel sito è possibile ammirare una grande tagliata di età romana, alta più di 22 metri ed estesa per una lunghezza di 55 m: i segni visibili su tutta la parete sono il frutto di un incessante lavoro di escavazione lungo più di quattro secoli ed effettuato completamente a mano, con picconi, cunei e mazze. Alla base della tagliata e negli spazi adiacenti si possono inoltre vedere numerosi blocchi semilavorati in marmo bardiglio, la varietà estratta a Fossacava, abbandonati dai Romani nella cava ormai abbandonata.
Il visitatore di ogni età conoscerà un mondo affascinante e particolare, fatto di tante storie: quella della colonia romana di Luni, nel cui territorio si trovavano le cave di Carrara, quelle dei cavatori e delle tecniche estrattive da loro impiegate, fino a quelle degli dei che dai cavatori erano adorati. Durante la visita si scopriranno le modalità e i motivi della produzione dei blocchi semilavorati rinvenuti a Fossacava e nelle altre cave, i sistemi di gestione delle cave e, non ultimi, i diversi utilizzi del marmo bardiglio e la sua diffusione nell’ambito dell’Impero Romano.
Nel 2021 il sito di Fossacava è stato aperto al pubblico con un percorso ampliato e rinnovato, incentrato su un graphic novel che illustra ai visitatori di ogni età la storia della cava in modo avvincente ed efficace. Un QRcode presente sui pannelli consente inoltre di scaricare ulteriori approfondimenti e curiosità su Fossacava e sul più ampio fenomeno dell’escavazione del marmo di età romana.
Le attività legate all’area archeologica prevedono visite guidate e laboratori didattici per le scuole di ogni ordine e grado, pensate per guidare i partecipanti alla scoperta di questo mondo così particolare e così fortemente connesso con il territorio attraverso il divertimento e con la stimolazione della personale creatività.
I visitatori, gruppi e singoli, posso prenotare le visite guidate anche in anticipo. È sempre possibile richiedere la visita guidata durante l’orario di apertura dell’Infopoint.

Come raggiungerci:
In auto: dal centro di Carrara seguire le indicazioni per la cave/paese di Colonnata. Seguire la strada comunale per Colonnata, 300 m dopo un grande incrocio troverete una strada sterrata segnalata da un monolite in marmo con l’iscrizione Cava romana. Seguire la strada sterrata in auto o a piedi; al termine troverete un ampio spiazzo con il Punto Informazioni e accoglienza dell’Area archeologica di Fossacava.
In autobus: Da Piazza Monzoni con la linea L50. Fermata Calagio Dir.Mare. Proseguire per la strada sterrata segnalata da un monolite in marmo con l’iscrizione Cava romana. Al termine della strada troverete un ampio spiazzo con il Punto Informazioni e accoglienza dell’Area archeologica di Fossacava.

The archaeological site of Fossacava. Discovering a Roman age quarry
The Fossacava site is one of the very few quarries from the Roman age to have been the subject of a stratigraphic archaeological excavation, in Italy and in other territories of the Empire; the research, conducted in 2015 by the Municipality of Carrara and the Archaeological Superintendence of Tuscany, allowed the history of the Roman quarry to be reconstructed in all its aspects.
At the site, it is possible to admire a large Roman quarry cut, more than 22 metres high and 55 metres long: the signs visible on the entire wall are the result of incessant excavation work lasting more than four centuries and carried out entirely by hand, with picks, wedges and sledgehammers. At the base of the cut and in the adjoining spaces, one can also see numerous half-finished blocks of bardiglio marble, the variety quarried in Fossacava, abandoned by the Romans once excavations stopped.
Visitors of all ages will discover a fascinating world, made up of many stories: that of the Roman colony of Luni, in whose territory the quarries of Carrara were located, those of the quarrymen and of the extraction techniques they employed, and even those of the gods worshipped by the quarrymen. During the visit we will discover methods and reasons for the production of the semi-finished blocks found in Fossacava and the other quarries, quarries management systems and, last but not least, the different uses of bardiglio marble and its trade within the Roman Empire.
The activities related to the archaeological area include guided tours and educational workshops for schools of all levels, designed to guide participants in the discovery of this world so special and so strongly connected with the territory through fun and with the stimulation of personal creativity.

How to get to Fossacava:
By car: from the center of Carrara follow the signs to the quarry/town of Colonnata. Follow the municipal road to Colonnata, 300 m after a large intersection you will find a dirt road marked by a marble monolith with the inscription Cava romana. Follow the dirt road by car or on foot; at the end you will find a large clearing with the Fossacava Archaeological Area Information and Reception Point.
